One of the few “recession proof” industries on the planet, food services and the restaurant business are almost always on the lookout for high quality restaurant managers that can come in, take over an operation, and whip things into shape in record time – creating a restaurant that functions like a finely engineered Swiss watch, and one that is profitable as well!
Think you have what it takes to pursue a career in restaurant management?
If you have been seriously considering jumping headfirst into the world of becoming a restaurant manager, you have to know that you are going to need to be one of the “rare few” that actually has what it takes to get the job done right – and enjoy it!
Truth be told, there is a lot of stress and pressure placed upon those that have successfully completed a restaurant management training program or received their restaurant management degree from a high quality culinary institution (like the New England Culinary Institute, for example).
However, the rewards of becoming one of these elite restaurant managers are absolutely off the charts. You’ll have the ability to pilot your own course for your career, have the pick of the litter when it comes time to take advantage of different job opportunities, and command a fantastic amount of money (and no small amount of respect) all at the exact same time!
Here are just a couple of things you’ll want to think about when it comes time to start on the path to becoming a restaurant manager!
The first step is attending a high quality restaurant management school
The very first thing you’re going to want to do is determine which of the restaurant management school opportunities you want to attend.
Almost all culinary institutes (including the New England Culinary Institute) offer culinary management degree programs and some form or another of restaurant management training for all of their students – and that’s probably going to be your best bet when you’re looking to get the foundation of your education taken care of.
At the same time, it’s not a bad idea to think about taking advantage of specialty restaurant management training programs that may be available in your local area.
These programs are usually run by restaurant managers in their downtime (what little they have of it), and can give you a real look into the life of a restaurant manager before you take the plunge.
These kinds of restaurant management training programs are worth their weight in gold!
Really take a good, long, hard look at your skills and abilities
You’re going to need to make sure that you have the necessary skills and abilities to really excel in the world of restaurant management.
For one thing, you are going to have to juggle the real life stress and pressure of running a successful restaurant.
That’s no small feat.
You are going to need to understand all of the different positions underneath you in and out just as though you were hired for them, how they fit into the grand scheme of things, and how to manage all of these employees to get the very most out of them.
It may not seem simple and straightforward at first (especially if you haven’t gone through a restaurant management school program just yet), but for the right person this is an incredibly rewarding position – monetarily and as well as personally!
The most important thing for you to remember is that you are going to have to wear multiple hats when it comes time to take advantage of a restaurant management position.
The more you know about your restaurant (and the more you rely on your restaurant management degree and your restaurant management training), the better off you are going to be!
